Tom Bonnell on Building a Successful Relationship with the School Board

As the Head of School at Savannah Country Day School for five years, Tom Bonnell knows that a Head of School’s authority relies on building a foundation of successful and trusting relationships with a large number of people in the school, most especially with the School’s Board of Trustees. For Tom Bonnell, the ability of a Head of School to create substantive and positive changes over time will depend highly upon the quality of these relationships.

One of the most important things a Head of School must do in order to successfully build up relationships is to meet with the Board Chair and to become fluent with the Board agenda for the year. This is because the ability to accomplish this agenda will be a significant part of how a Head of School will be evaluated and on which his success will be judged.

Tom Bonnell also stresses the importance of understanding not only the agenda of the Board as a whole, but also for each Board committee as well. By doing this, a Head of School will be able to better align himself with the schools goals and long-term vision and mission.
