Tom Bonnell on Building a Successful Relationship with the School Board

As the Head of School at Savannah Country Day School for five years, Tom Bonnell knows that a Head of School’s authority relies on building a foundation of successful and trusting relationships with a large number of people in the school, most especially with the School’s Board of Trustees. For Tom Bonnell, the ability of a Head of School to create substantive and positive changes over time will depend highly upon the quality of these relationships.

One of the most important things a Head of School must do in order to successfully build up relationships is to meet with the Board Chair and to become fluent with the Board agenda for the year. This is because the ability to accomplish this agenda will be a significant part of how a Head of School will be evaluated and on which his success will be judged.

Tom Bonnell also stresses the importance of understanding not only the agenda of the Board as a whole, but also for each Board committee as well. By doing this, a Head of School will be able to better align himself with the schools goals and long-term vision and mission.

Louis F. Albanese On Having Active Investment Management

A lot of investors think that adopting a long-term buy and hold strategy will earn them a good return on their investments in the long-run. But Louis F. Albanese, President and Chief Executive Officer of Catamount Management Group, points out that this type of investing strategy does not always work. L. Albanese gives the specific example of the 10-year compound annual return for the S&P through 2008 being a loss of 1.38%.

“That means that investors who used a passive approach to their investments ultimately lost approximately 13 percent of their assets,” explains Louis F. Albanese.

This is why taking an active strategic management strategy in investing is important to earn significant returns. However not all people have the time necessary to do the large amounts of work and research needed in active investment management. More importantly, only few people have the skill and experience needed to be successful in active investment management. That’s why it’s important for investors to choose an experienced investment manager like Catamount Management Group to help manage their investments.

Louis F. Albanese has led Catamount Management Group to impressive results. The company posted a 67% increase in earnings for its clients with an average annual return of 10.84% from 2004 to 2008.
